Led by new President Kathleen Wu, the USTA Foundation has announced its new Board of Directors, slated to serve a three-year term until 2023. Their tenure officially began on Jan. 14, 2021.
Alongside Wu, Molly John and Jamie Majeski will serve as Co-Vice Presidents, while Y. David Scharf and Richard Ader round out the top officers as Treasurer and Secretary, respectively. All are familiar to the USTA Foundation leadership, as Ader begins a second term as Secretary, while the new Vice Presidents and Treasurer previously served as Directors at Large.
Immediate Past President Thomas Chen, whose two-term tenure concluded at the end of 2020, is remaining with the USTA Foundation's administration as one of 10 Directors at Large.

Board of Directors
Kathleen Wu, President: Wu, now President, previously served as a Vice President on the USTA Foundation Board. Wu also serves as a Member of the Disbursement, Nominating & Governance, and Program and Services Committees, and she served as Co-Chair of the LA Project Task Force. Wu is a Real Estate/Finance attorney with the global law firm Hunton Andrews Kurth, and has served in numerous leadership positions within her firm. Wu has served in several capacities for the USTA at the National and Section levels, including: USTA Board of Directors, 2015-16 (she chaired the Strategic and Creative Planning Committee, was the Board’s representative to the TIA and the Volunteer Development Council, and a member of the Major Construction Oversight Committee); USTA Diversity and Inclusion Committee, Chair, June 2012; Vice Chair, 2010; USTA Constitution and Rules Committee, Member, 2008-10; USTA Texas: Vice President Recreational (Community) Tennis, 2013-14; Vice President Administration, 2011-12; General Counsel, June 2007 to present; Management Committee, 2007-present; Dallas Tennis Association, Board of Directors, 2012-13 (Advisory Board, 2015-present). Wu is a frequent writer, speaker and advocate for diversity, equity and inclusion in the legal profession and beyond. Her work has earned her recognition from a variety of organizations, including the National Diversity Council and the US Pan Asian American Chamber of Commerce – Southwest. In addition, she is a USTA member in the Texas Section.
Molly John, Vice President: John, now Vice President, previously served as Director at Large on the USTA Foundation Board. John also currently serves as the Chairperson of the USTA Audit Committee, Co-Chair of the Program and Services Committee, and is a Member of the Nomination and Governance Committee. Professionally, John is an Assurance Services Partner at Ernst & Young. John is a Member of the Baruch College Zicklin School of Business, Dean’s Advisory Counsel, and has recently been nominated to become a Member of the New Jersey Chapter of the International Women’s Forum. John is a USTA member in the Eastern Section.
Jamie Majeski, Vice President: Majeski, now Vice President, previously served as Director at Large on the USTA Foundation Board. Majeski also serves as a member of the Disbursements Committee and Development Committee, and is a USTA member in the Eastern Section. Majeski is the Founder and Vice Chairman of Cydcor, Inc., and the President of the Majeski Foundation. The Majeski Foundation focuses on children’s welfare, and was awarded Operation Smile’s Humanitarian of the Year award in 2015. Other boards Majeski has served/serves on are: St. Thomas University (Miami); Penn State University Small College of Business; and Princeton Nursery. Majeski is currently the basketball coach for Princeton High School.
Y. David Scharf, Treasurer: Scharf, now Treasurer, previously served as a Director at Large on the USTA Foundation Board. Scharf also serves as Co-Chair of the Development Committee, and is a member of the Nominating and Governance, Audit, and Finance & Investment Committees. Scharf has been a member of the Board since 2010, and previously served as the Foundation’s Vice President. Scharf is an attorney, and partner at Morrison and Cohen and he serves on several of its committees. In addition, he helped found and served on the Board of the Lifetime Care Foundation for the Disabled.
Richard Ader, Secretary: This is Ader’s third term serving on the Foundation Board and his second as Secretary. He is a Co-Chair of the Disbursement Committee. In addition, Ader served as Co-Chair of the LA Project Task Force. He is a current USTA member in the Eastern Section. Ader has founded a NJTL in Bennington, Vermont. Professionally, Ader is the Founder, Chairman and Chief Investment Officer of US Realty Advisors (1989 – Present). Ader has also served on the Board of the Women’s Sports Foundation (1990-1997), serving as Treasurer from 1994 – 1997. Currently Ader is on the Board of the Southern Vermont Health Care System, the Board of Trustees of Bennington College, as well as the Chairman of the College of Arts and Sciences Advisory Board, University of Vermont.
Directors at Large
Thomas Chen, Director at Large: Chen served two terms as the President of the USTA Foundation (2013-2020) where he oversaw the growth of the Foundation’s revenues, integrated the Foundation with the NJTL, assisted in the launch of the Carol Kimmelman Athletic and Academic Campus and led initiatives to improve governance, strategy and planning. Prior to serving as the President, Chen was on the Foundation Board as a Director at Large for two years. He has returned to the Board in that capacity for this term. Chen is a Managing Director and Vice Chairman at Morgan Stanley in the Investment Banking Division. Chen graduated from Allegheny College (BS) and the Kellogg Graduate School of Management (MBA). Chen has also served on the Board of Directors for the United Way of NY (2009 – 2011) and the Allegheny College Board of Trustees (2002 – 2005). Chen and his family are members of the USTA Eastern Section.
Violet Clark, Director at Large, USTA Appointee: In her role as Vice President on the USTA Board of Directors, Clark is a USTA appointee to the USTA Foundation Board as a Director at Large. Clark graduated with a B.A. from Brown University and a J.D. from Cornell Law School. She currently is a partner at Laner Muchin, Ltd., representing management in employment law and labor relations matters before the EEOC, the Illinois Human Rights Commission, state and federal courts; wage and hour matters before the Illinois and United States Departments of Labor; affirmative action matters; as well as collective bargaining negotiations, contract drafting and interpretation, grievance handling, unfair labor practice matters and problem-solving in most, if not all, facets of the employer/employee relationship. Clark has volunteered with USTA National on several committees. She served with the USTA/Midwest Section from 2007 until the present, including as Section President. In addition, during that time, she served on many Section committees. Since 2007, Clark has served on the Board of the USTA/Midwest Tennis and Education Foundation, including as President. Clark served on the Chicago District Tennis Association Board from 1997 until 2001, and was its first African-American President. Clark also served on the Chicago Tennis Patron’s Board, including as its President from 2002 until 2012. She was inducted into the CDTA Hall of Fame in 2018.
Benjamin Doller, Director at Large: Doller, now a Director at Large, previously served as a Vice President on the USTA Foundation Board. Doller also serves as the Co-Chairperson of the Nominating and Governance Committee, as well as is a member of the Development Committee. Doller has actively served on the Foundation Board for 12 years, and is a member of the USTA Eastern Section. Professionally, Doller is a Chairman and Executive Vice President at Sotheby’s, and has been with the company for more than 35 years. Doller has also served as a Member of the Board at: God’s Love We Deliver and EOS Orchestra, as well as American Friends of the Musee d’Orsay. Doller volunteers his time as an auctioneer for various charity events. In addition, Doller has opened his home to the USTA and Foundation to hold a variety of events, including fundraising activities.
Dr. Brian Hainline, Director at Large, USTA Appointee: In his role as First Vice President of the USTA Board of Directors, Hainline is a USTA appointee to the USTA Foundation Board as a Director at Large. Hainline is serving his fourth term on the USTA Board of Directors; his first as First Vice President. Dr. Hainline previously served on the USTA Board of Directors as a Director at Large in 2007-08, where he was Board Liaison to the Community Tennis Council. He also served as a Director at Large in 2017-18, where he was Board Liaison to the Player Development Council and a member of the Budget Committee, and as vice president in 2019-20, where he was vice chair of the Budget Committee and Board Liaison to the Sections. Hainline was a founding member of the USTA’s Sport Science Committee and has been a member of the ITF Sport Science and Medicine Commission since 1993—serving as chair since 2003. He played No. 1 singles and doubles in his senior year at the University of Notre Dame, where he graduated Phi Beta Kappa before going on to earn his M.D. at the University of Chicago. He was the Chief Medical Officer of the US Open Tennis Championships for 16 years and of the USTA for four years. Currently Hainline is the NCAA Senior Vice President, Sport Science Institute and Chief Medical Officer – the first person to hold this title at the NCAA. Hainline is an accomplished author, having authored/edited nine books plus numerous chapters and peer-reviewed articles. He is a Fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine and the American Academy of Neurology, and is a Clinical Professor of Neurology at Indiana University School of Medicine and New York University School of Medicine.
Julia Levering, Director at Large: Levering currently serves as a Director at Large for the Foundation. In addition, she is the member of the Disbursement Committee, Member of the N&G Committee, and was a member of the LA Project Task Force for the Foundation. She has a long history of contributions to both the USTA and the Foundation. The first woman to serve as USTA President, Levering was instrumental in establishing the Foundation. She is on the USTA Governance Committee and also serves as a Board Member with Advantage Lancaster, a NJTL in Lancaster, PA.
Robert W. Oberrender, Director at Large: This is the second term Oberrender will serve on the Foundation’s Board. He serves as co-chair of the Disbursements Committee and is a member of the Program and Services Committee, the Finance and Investment Committee and leads the Task Force on NJTL growth and participation. Oberrender previously served as the Foundation’s Treasurer. Oberrender also serves on the Board of InnerCity Tennis Foundation, a 4-star NJTL Chapter, in Minneapolis, MN, and The Hill School, in Pottstown, PA. He is a member of the Northern Section of the USTA. Currently Oberrender serves on the Board of Directors of Auna S.A.A., SullivanCotter and Optum Bank, on the Advisory Board of EdLogics LLC and is a strategic advisor and investor in emerging organizations in the healthcare, and financial services industries. He served as the Chief Investment Officer and Treasurer of UnitedHealth Group (UNH) from 2002 - 2018.
Missie Rennie, Director at Large: Rennie currently serves as a Director at Large of the Foundation. Rennie also serves as a Member of the Development Committee, and Co-Chairperson of the Nominating and Governance Committee. She has been involved with and served the Foundation for many years, in many different positions and roles. Professionally, Rennie was in the television news industry with numerous accolades, including eight Emmys and a George Foster Peabody Award. She has served on a number of boards, as well as currently serves, that include: Vassar College; Miss Porter’s School; Global Cities; Teachers College; Asia Foundation; and Asian Cultural Council. Rennie is a USTA member in the Eastern Section.
Raj R. Vaswani, Director at Large: Vaswani currently serves as a Director at Large of the Foundation. He also serves as the Co-Chairperson for the Foundation’s Program and Services Committee and as a member of the Development Committee. Vaswani is Vice President, Law, at Johnson & Johnson (J&J), where he is also active in the company’s diversity, equity and inclusion efforts. Prior to working in healthcare, Vaswani was Vice President, operations and general counsel, of SunGard-Kiodex, a technology provider to the commodities and financial services industry. Prior to that, he specialized in venture capital and intellectual property transactions for the law firm Morrison & Foerster in New York. Vaswani is an avid tennis player and represented the U.S. in the ITF Seniors World Championships. He also served on the Adult Competitions Committee for the USTA Eastern Section. Vaswani is a graduate of Yale College and the NYU School of Law, where he received the Bender graduation prize for outstanding commitment to public service.
Ivan Zinn, Director at Large: Zinn was previously a member of the Foundation’s Advisory Board. Zinn founded Atalaya Capital in 2006 and serves as its Managing Partner and Chief Investment Officer. Atalaya is a special opportunities and private credit manager that manages capital on behalf of a wide range of investors including endowments, foundations and public and corporate pension plans. Zinn was previously responsible for HBK’s strategy to originate and invest in corporate and real estate loans and other special situation investments. Prior to HBK, Zinn established Highbridge/Zwirn Capital Management’s European investment effort and concentrated on media and telecom special situation investments in the U.S. Zinn was also a private equity investment professional at Leonard Green & Partners, L.P. and began his career as an investment banking analyst in the Los Angeles office of Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette. Zinn received a BA, magna cum laude, in Physics and Economics from Claremont McKenna College, where he was an NCAA All-American tennis player.
Kurt Zumwalt, Director at Large, USTA Appointee: In his role as Director at Large on the USTA Board of Directors, Zumwalt is a USTA appointee to the USTA Foundation Board as a Director at Large. Zumwalt is serving his second two-year term as Director at Large on the USTA Board of Directors. Zumwalt has served on the USTA’s Investment Committee since 2013. He currently serves as a Director on the USTA Foundation Incorporated’s Board of Directors, and is a member of its Audit Committee. Zumwalt was Treasurer at Amazon.com from 2014 through August 2019, providing leadership for the company’s global cash and portfolio management, debt financing, foreign exchange, insurance and treasury-related technology infrastructure. He joined Amazon.com as Assistant Treasurer in 2004 and successfully scaled the treasury department as Amazon grew from $8B in revenue to an annual run rate of more than $250B. Prior to working at Amazon, Zumwalt was Treasurer at ProBusiness Services from 2001 to 2003, and served in various financial roles, including Treasurer, at Wind River Systems during his tenure from 1997 to 2001. He also held positions in finance at PACCAR, Intel, Microsoft and Bank of America. Zumwalt has a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Pennsylvania, with a double major in Economics and Political Science, and an MBA in Finance and Accounting from the Michael G. Foster School of Business at the University of Washington. He currently serves on the board of directors for Ranpak Holdings Corp. (PACK) and Omeros Corporation (OMER). Zumwalt lives in Seattle, Washington. He is a member of the USTA Pacific Northwest Section.
