Grand Slam champion and Sports Broadcasting Hall of Famer, Mary Carillo, remains a champion of the USTA Foundation's work and has words of encouragement for the USTA Foundation family.
Mary, what are your days like now?
I live in Florida, where I've lived through more than a few hurricanes. When a big storm strikes you feel every bit of the aftermath - no power, no internet, a lack of goods. That's not been the case with the pandemic. I'm lucky enough to have everything I need. It's still beautiful. I take walks with the dogs, bike ride, and I'm still doing some Skype work for the Tennis Channel. I am truly one of the lucky ones.
What are you grateful for today?
I'm grateful everyone in my family is safe and healthy so far. My 89-year-old mother and 94-year-old father are hunkered down in the house I grew up in and their friends are constantly checking on them and taking great care of them. My son and daughter are healthy as well, and my three-month-old granddaughter, Reya, is the very best thing to happen in 2020.
What is your advice for overcoming challenges?
I think it probably helps to have an athletic heart and sensibility. If you stay healthy and fit and act with optimism and resilience, you're probably going to do all right.
