Anna Wintour, the chief content officer of Condé Nast, and Vogue's global editorial director, was honored Friday at the US Open with a special paver on the Avenue of Aces for her long-time support of the USTA Foundation, the USTA’s philanthropic arm.
For decades, Wintour has been a champion of the USTA Foundation’s mission to use tennis as a vehicle to prepare youth from under-resourced communities for life both on and off the court.
Wintour was joined by fashion designer Vera Wang, who herself has a paver on the Avenue, former world No. 4 and former USTA Foundation chairperson James Blake, USTA Foundation Board Secretary David Scharf, philanthropist Cheryl Scharf, USTA CEO and Executive Director Lew Sherr, and USTA Foundation CEO Ginny Ehrlich, among others.
Stretching from the main entry of the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center to Arthur Ashe Stadium, the Avenue of Aces is made up of brick, bronze and white bronze pavers and divided into 12 "neighborhoods," with ten named after a former US Open champion, including Andre Agassi, Billie Jean King, Chris Evert, Stefanie Graf, Ivan Lendl, John McEnroe, Martina Navratilova, Pete Sampras, wheelchair tennis pioneer Randy Snow as well as the Celebration Court, Doubles Champion and Founder's Court neighborhoods.
