“I was reading about a Spanish mountain climber named Carlos Soria who, at 70, is attempting to become the oldest person to summit the 14 highest peaks in the world. Inspired by that story, I thought, it’s time for me to run a marathon.  It has been 20 years since I ran a marathon and I thought I would never run another one, but when the opportunity to help USTA Serves presented itself right about the time I was reading about Carlos, it was very hard to resist.  It is a huge honor and privilege to be running for USTA Serves, as it also presents a great opportunity to tell the rest of the country a little bit about what a great place South Texas is to live, work, and play sports.  The New York Marathon is also a great way to show my children that sports and exercise are a lifelong commitment that doesn’t end at some arbitrary point in life.  It is also a great opportunity to expand what people think is possible, because if I can run a marathon, anyone can.  We as a nation need to expand what we think we can accomplish together.  Sports is a great leveler and a vehicle to build confidence and bring different people together. That is why programs like USTA Serves are so valuable.”
