Since 1994, the USTA Foundation, the national philanthropic arm of the United States Tennis Association, has used the sport of tennis to change the lives of under-resourced youth, their families and communities, by giving them the tools to help them achieve their dreams, on and off the court.

The USTA Foundation's flagship National Junior Tennis and Learning network, founded in 1969 by tennis legends Arthur Ashe and Charlie Pasarell and philanthropist Sheridan Snyder, features more than 250 sport-based youth development organizations that service more than 150,000 kids around the country each year by providing free or low-cost tennis instruction, academic support, life skills training.

In addition to supporting NJTL, the USTA Foundation also awards scholarships and grants to these athletes and programs, further providing them with the resources to excel in all areas of life.

What is an nJTL?

Three friends with a shared dream: The story of NJTL began more than 50 years ago, as professional tennis entered a new age, the Open Era, that was full of possibilities. Arthur Ashe, Charlie Pasarell and Sheridan Snyder wanted to extend that potential to America's youth by introducing as many kids as they could to tennis, knowing first-hand the many benefits that the sport provided and lessons that it could could teach.

Nearly two decades later, NJTL moved under the umbrella of the USTA, and later still, it became the flagship program of the USTA Foundation. But those founding principles still guide the work of the NJTL network today.
